Raising a Generation of Book Lovers: Reading to Our Toddlers

Stacey Duggar, Preschool Director

reading preschoolWith approximately 3000 books in our preschool library, our preschool teachers stress the importance of literacy and model it by reading to the children 4-5 different times during the school day.

While toddlers may initially squirm and become distracted during story time, eventually they’ll learn to stay put for the duration of the book.

reading preschool 2Here are some reasons for reading to them at such an early age:

  • Along with reading comprehension comes a stronger self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention, all of which will serve the child well when he/ she enters school.
  • Reading to toddlers helps them realize that reading is fun! Early encourages them to view books as an indulgence, not a chore. Children who are exposed to reading early are much more likely to choose books over video games, television, and other forms of entertainment as they grow older.
